Dr. Daniel is an inter-spiritual hospice chaplain and end-of-life educator certified in death, dying and bereavement by the Association of Death Education and Counseling and in family-focused grief therapy by The Portland Institute.  She conducts workshops throughout the U.S. and is an adjunct instructor in death studies and chaplaincy at Marian University,  the University of Maryland and the Graduate Theological Union. She  is the founder of The Afterlife ConferenceThe Conference on Death, Grief and Belief, and the Ask Doctor Death podcast.  CE TRACK

Stephen Findley, MDiv
The Spiritual Worlds of Children

Stephen is a retired pediatric chaplain who has worked with both children and adults at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston TX, and is now manager of chaplaincy services for Memorial Hermann hospital systems. His talk will address how children approach death, and the common struggles parents face when their child has a terminal illness, with a focus on religious and spiritual coping methods children and families use when facing end-of-life. When Spirituality is a Broken Space

Matthew Remski is a journalist and yoga instructor who, with colleagues Derek Beres and Julian Marc Walker, hosts The Conspirituality Podcast. In the podcast, the trio explores the ways in which charismatic influencers exploit their followers by peddling dangerous theories and theologies that distort healthy, nurturing spiritual beliefs and practices.  In this presentation, Matthew will talk about how we can think we’re practicing to heal our wounds, even as we deepen them, how we can love teachers and methods that might be toxic to us, and how we can confuse the sensations of transcendence and trauma. What the Mystics Tell Us About Dying  

Over the past 50+ years Matthew Fox has challenged stale doctrines, called leaders to account, awakened minds, and healed wounded souls, and has been called "the most comprehensive, surely the most challenging religious-spiritual teacher in America." In this presentation, he will share  teachings from the mystics about dying before we die, the symbology or resurrection, and how patriarchy sees dying vs. other ways of seeing dying. He will include readings from indigenous teachings and the goddess cultures; from Rumi, Eckhart, Hafiz, Mary Oliver, and a critical look at resurrection stories from the Christian gospels.  CE TRACK

New to Us: Emerging Death and Grief Support Practices in Black Communities Since Covid

Historically, African American grievers turned to their churches, communities and families for death and grief support But the Covid pandemic triggered  interest in hospice care, counseling and grief support groups, services that have not been widely utilized before the pandemic. Rev. Risher will share experiences from her own church community during the pandemic, and from her research on grief support practices in the Black community.  CE TRACK

Die Before You Die: Dreaming as a Conscious Dying Practice

As a long-time student of Buddhism, Andrew presents this tradition from a contemporary perspective – blending the ancient wisdom of the East with modern knowledge from the West. Drawing on years of intensive study and practice, he teaches on the opportunities that exist in obstacles, helping people with hardship and pain, death and dying, and problems in meditation. In his presentation, he will explain the Buddhist "die before you die" mediation for become free from worldly concerns as preparation for end-of-life.  CE TRACK

Derek Beres
Psychedelics in Death, Dying and Bereavement: Therapy, Ritual and Healing

Derek is a multi-faceted author, speaker, and media expert who has served in senior editorial positions at a number of tech companies and has written for such stellar publications as National Geographic and Rolling Stone. He is also the co-host of the Conspirituality podcast, has published eight books, including Hero's Dose: The Case for Psychedelics in Ritual and Therapy. He will talk about the use of psychedelic therapy to address death anxiety and inner exploration at end-of-life, sharing his quarter-century journey with psychedelics and the latest science on their role in mental health treatments.

    • CE credits for psychologists are provided by the Spiritual Competency Academy (SCA) which is co-sponsoring this program. The Spiritual Competency Academy is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Spiritual Competency Academy maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
    • The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts CE credits for LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFT license renewal for programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association.
    • LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFTs, and other mental health professionals from states other than California need to check with their state licensing board as to whether or not they accept programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association.
